This debate always makes me laugh. This is the way I feel about it
The Audi A8 is one of my favorite cars. I wish I would own one, but I’m a young millennial with no money so I made the sensible choice to get a 1991 Lincoln Towncar. It had the luxury, the comfortable feel and made me feel like a boss. All sentiments I think the Audi would have given me.
Similarly, I wish I could get a new sports car. A good 4C will do. I like that wind in the hair feeling and going fast for possible track days. I can’t afford a new one since I’m a recent grad. Navient (Sallie Mae) and Nelnet want me to sell a portion of my balls every month in order to make monthly payments, so I would have to settle for a Miata for that purpose. It won’t be the same feeling, but it’ll be close enough.
I like trucks. Not too big like a F-450, and not too small like an old S-10. I’m not looking to tow my house from PA across the country to an income tax-less state. I just like the look of trucks, especially in minor bro-ed out versions with sensible lift kits. I’m a believer of Toyota reliability so Tundras are my weakness. I wish I could get the Coloranyon twins, this new Ridgeline, or any full size on the market, but I would need to jump about 2 career ladders to afford any of those. I settled for a cheap and capable 1st gen Tundra that puts a smile on my face everyday I drive it, and is able to carry a chair or help a buddy move when needed. I know any other car can do the task (my old 3rd gen 4Runner moved me from my college house to my big boy house), but very seldom does a car make me happy as my (not used for intended purposes) truck does.
Sometimes people just want to be happy so they make buying decisions based on where they are in life. Other times, we really want something and can’t get it, so we settle for the next best thing. I say be happy with your ride and let others be happy with theirs.

I think you need to combine all your wants together and get a Lincoln Blackwood with a Coyote swap.

I also find it ironic, “the ridge line will be more than enough for any buyer” yet we all get these hellcats FoST GTI stories. I mean our lives are filled with excess. Excess in every facet.

That's an idea. I hate the Blackwood though. Next best thing would have to be a supercharged Tundra. I already have a build sheet for mine to go in effect as soon as I get a couple of promotions.

don’t supercharge the tundra, the internals of the Tunrda aren’t up to it. Con rod failures.

Haha it’s the only Lincoln product I don’t like. The Mark LT catches my eye more.

Overstyled, or just swagalicious? Aluminum-pinstriped poly bed with stainless lining and carpet? If that’s a bad idea I don’t want to see a good one.

I hear this a lot and I don’t think you are wrong that sometimes you just want something...however...you want it for a reason and those reasons, though hard to articulate, are deep rooted in something more than a need.
This is the reason that the stigma exists; people know you don’t need it, or at least its likely, and thus its seen as an external validation of an internal issue of a deep rooted nature. Sometimes its benign like nostalgia or sentiment and sometimes its a form of hubris...the point is that people see what they want to see.
The solution isn’t trying to explain your reasons, its not caring what other see your reasons as.
The trick, William Potter, is not minding that it hurts.

Well, let’s see. It’s got Cobra heads, King Ranch buckets all in leather, an insane number of silly options (double tailgate, power tonneau) not available elsewhere, it’s probably low miles, and you can be 100% sure it has no bed rust. And it’s going for about the price of an unusually good ‘02 F150 supercrew. F’ing duh you should buy it.

People can GTFO about their opinions on what you need. If they want to buy it for me then they can talk.

1st gen only. The supercharger for the 2uz-fe was developed for the Land Cruiser with the same engine except that the Land Cruiser had forged internals and the Tundra had cast. The con rods on both engines are super thin but the forged ones seem to hold up okay where the cast ones can fail.

Ford sold, what, half a million new F-150s last year? If there is any stigma associated with buying a truck, it doesnt extend far beyond the city limits of Manhatten, DC, and San Francisco.

Take trucks for example,
If you’ve got a built up off-road rig and it’s apparent that you use it off-roading I have not issues.
If you’ve got some big bro-dozer that’s all show and have never touched dirt I think you’re a lame-ass posser.
People draw comparisons between bro trucks and supercars, I think the main difference is that I can see the appeal of driving a Lamborghini, but I can’t see the appeal of driving slow ugly truck.

re: the joy of trucks different strokes and all. Talking off road trucks; I’m certain that people draw conclusions about me and my cruiser...why I need a truck like that as a daily, do it take it off road...etc. The truth is that I don’t have a good reason I can articulate as to why I need it (need in the sense of a want that drives a purchase) and that they are right it is a daft a daily and I’m not off road when most people see me (isn’t that the point? to go AWAY from people?) so it must be the wrong car for me, right? Well in that sense it is, but its also the right car for me cause I took the time to find and buy it so it must be something I needed for whatever reason. Owning your reasons and accepting the windfall is key. Do I care that people think I’m a wasteful posing oaf? Not really...its the truth of me as the owner of the car, why pretend its not? Its the lie that’s damaging.

HammerheadFistpunch

01/14/2016 at 12:41 | 0 |
depends on what you mean by “full size” and the why is because I am allowed only one car from the better half and I like to go places where there are not people when I’m not in the office.

That Tundra is a fine choice, it’s a great truck. Sometimes you just need a truck. I bought my $2500 ‘95 F150 for that reason, but I don’t drive the thing every day because 14mpg hurts. I sure as hell don’t need or want a new truck.
